Colonoscopy And Colon Cancer Screening

Colonoscopy is a gold standard test for Colon cancer screening. Colorectal cancer is a 3rd most type of cancer worldwide and in the United States. Screening colonoscopy is a simple modality to prevent colorectal cancer. Screening colonoscopy is a gold standard modality for Colon cancer diagnosis. But, there are other screening modalities as stool and blood test are also available. Most commonly the colorectal cancer is diagnosed in the age between 50 and 70 years. However, the incidence of colorectal cancer has been rising in the younger population. It has led to the recommendations by many societies to change the screening age from 50 years to age of 45. Moreover, the current recommendation by most of the medical societies is to start screening from the age of 45 years. Dr Singh performs colon screenings at various centers in Phoenix, AZ on a regular basis.

Available Modalities For Colon Cancer Screening

You have the option of different screening modalities and tests to screen for colorectal cancer. The common gold standard test is a colonoscopy test. A colonoscopy entails use of a long flexible instrument which is passed through rectum to all the way on the right side of the colon. Your colorectal surgeon will most commonly perform this procedure under a light anesthesia. It is a diagnostic as well as therapeutic modality as the polyps can be removed at the same time. Because some types of polyps can lead to formation of cancer so your colorectal surgeon may remove them during the colonoscopy procedure. It thus prevents cancer Formation. It is one of the most effective screening modalities.

The other modalities include use of stool tests , use of CT scan /virtual colonoscopy, use of Barium x-ray enema and blood tests.

Follow Up And Surveillance

After your colorectal surgeon performs this test, he may ask you to follow up based on the findings during the procedure.  Your follow up colonoscopy will depend upon different factors. These factors are- the number and types of polyps removed during your initial procedure. Other deciding factors include your family and genetic history, presence of risk factors like previous history of polyps or colon or other types of cancer and age and other medical conditions. If you have normal colonoscopy and no other significant history, then your surgeon may advise you to repeat the procedure after 10 years. It is because of the reason that it takes an average of 10 years for the formation of cancer from a polyp. Please ask your colorectal surgeon regarding the follow-up after your colonoscopy.
