Constipation is a common condition which can be defined with infrequent bowel movements or change in consistency of stool to hard stool, or sense of incomplete evacuation or feeling of blockage. Being constipated means your bowel movements are hard or happen less often than normal. We all go through this condition at some point in our lifetime. But it is usually temporary situation most often. Although it’s not usually serious, you’ll feel much better when your body is back on track.

Range of normal bowel movements varies among individuals. Every individual is different, and it is a misbelief that every individual should have a daily bowel movement.

What Are Causes Of Constipation?

Diet and Lifestyle related as:
low fibre intake
Low fluid intake
Lack of Physical activities
Medical conditions as:
Hypothyroidism
Diabetes Mellitus
Different medications especially pain related meds as narcotics, and psychotic drugs.
Bowel related Diseases as:
Cancer of bowel especially Colorectal cancer
Inflammatory bowel disease as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis
Diverticulitis
Colon inertia or Slow colon motility

Treatment

You should contact your physician if you suffer from constipation, and it does not improve with diet and lifestyle changes.

He may order Blood tests, imaging modalities like CT scan or you may need a colonoscopy evaluation. Medical management is the first line of treatment and there are certain medications that can be used. Irritable bowel syndrome is also among the common causes and sometime patients have both constipation and diarrhea and other associated symptoms. Dietary modifications and medications our first line of treatment.Surgical resection of the bowel / colon Is the last option if the medical and conservative management fails.
