Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

Hemorrhoids are cushions in the anal canal which have blood vessels, connective tissue and muscles. When you have a thrombosed external hemorrhoid, it means that you have a blood clot or a thrombus within the hemorrhoid (usually external hemorrhoid). Nonetheless, this can cause severe pain and sometimes bleeding. You may feel a sudden appearance of a lump at the anal area. A thrombosed external hemorrhoid can cause significant disruption in your daily routine and work activities.

Types of Hemorrhoids :

Hemorrhoids are a part of normal anatomy of human body. They are present in the anus which is the last part of human large intestine. They are also known as Piles. Hemorrhoids consist of blood vessels and connective tissue and act as cushions for anus. This helps in having normal bowel movements. However, enlarged hemorrhoids can stretch these blood vessels causing thinning and bleeding.

There are two types of hemorrhoids internal and external based on the location Inside or outside the anus. Firstly, external hemorrhoids are outside the anus on the skin. You may not have any bleeding or pain unless they have thromboses/blood clots. This condition is called thrombosed hemorrhoids and they can appear as a lump in the anal area Which can cause significant pain, discomfort and occasional bleeding. Your colorectal surgeon can treat this condition with a small procedure in the office. It usually leads to faster recovery. Secondly, internal hemorrhoids are inside the anal canal and can lead to significant Bleeding, protrusion, thrombosis, pain.

Symptoms And Treatment:

In Summary, a thrombosed hemorrhoid can cause severe pain and a lump in the anal area and can also sometimes cause anal bleeding. This lump or thrombosed hemorrhoid can form as a result of constipation, straining or other strenuous physical activities. If any of these happen, please call the colorectal surgeon. Colorectal surgeons can treat most of these hemorrhoids with a minor procedure in the office.
