Crohn’s disease Is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal track from the mouth to anus. Although crohn’s disease affects the lining of the tract but it can also cause penetrating fistulas which involve and extend through the entire bowel wall.

Causes And Symptoms of Crohn's disease

Although, the exact cause of the disease is unknown but it is related to the body’s immune system and other type of infections. Additionally, Its symptoms can be wide ranging from abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, weight loss, constipation, rectal bleeding, rectal abscess or fistula formation, rectal pain or anal fissure. Undoubtedly, a variety of symptoms are associated with crohn’s disease and include 

 1. Abdominal Cramping and Pain 

 2. DIarrhea 

 3. Unexplained Weight loss

 4. Fever 

 5. Rectal Bleeding

 6. Anal pain, infections and fistulas 

 7. Tiredness and Fatigue

 8. Rarely it can cause contipation.

 9. Long term inflammation can rarely cause cancer formation.

Diagnosis 
Diagnosis of crohn’s disease includes detailed evaluation with History and physcial examination, Colonoscopy evaluation, blood tests and Imaging scans. Another key point is that this disease can cause formation of fistulas between different organs and Intestinal tract. 

Treatment of Crohn's disease

Additionally, first line for the treatment of crohn’s disease is medical management and usually the gastroenterologist treat this condition as a first approach with medications. Regardless, surgery is only needed if there is failure of medical management Or for other conditions like abscess, fistula Formation, obstruction, bleeding, malignancy.

However, crohn’s disease is a lifelong condition, and a remission is possible with the medications. Certainly, your physician may advise you dietary and lifestyle modifications especially quitting smoking can reduce the risk of recurrence significantly. Finally, medication treatments may be needed to keep the disease suppressed and it is very important to stay compliant with the medications.
